Supermarkets should create a plastic-free aisle in every store to help prevent tons of waste packaging ending up in the world’s oceans, say scientists and campaigners. In an open letter to i, key figures who helped to identify the ocean pollution crisis call on retail chains to act and reduce the 300 million tons of plastic produced globally each year. Activists from A Plastic Planet hope to convince the UK’s leading supermarket operators that offering shoppers a choice will make a difference.
They want them to introduce an aisle that would offer food packaged only in biodegradable materials. Today, 25 leading oceanographers, including Dr Mike Allen, of Plymouth Marine Lab, and Dr Maria Baker, of the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, are joining the campaign.
