At the end of this decade when we take a collective look back at the last 10 years of human history, I hope we will be able to reflect on 2017 with at least an ounce of satisfaction. While the agonies of Brexit and the calamitous opening exchanges of the Trump Presidency have put a real downer on 2017, this year has also seen a profound positive shift in the way we relate to the material that has had us hooked since the 1950s.
2017 has been the year when the world has woken up the lunacies of throwaway plastic. Once a cause shunned by all but the most dogged ecological activists, a revulsion for unfettered plastic pollution is now shared by many in the mainstream. While activists were once at loggerheads with big business, a consensus is starting to emerge on the dire consequences of decades of veracious plastic consumption.
