Some 15 years ago, if you wanted to clear a room in five seconds flat, you’d bring up the subject of plastic in the ocean. For years, the ocean plastic crisis was a decidedly unfashionable issue. To talk about these issues made one an ardent tree hugger, naive to the inescapable realities of consumer capitalism as the ultimate vehicle of human progress. The perceived wisdom used to be that the oceans’ vastness meant that they were unpollutable. But over the past few years, something amazing has happened. The curse of ocean plastic has become a mainstream issue, and one that people are prepared to sit up and listen to.
